Aquatic Organisms Museum of Guangdong  Ocean University

The Aquatic Organisms Museum Of Guangdong Ocean University was founded in July 1991 and then moved here in November 2004. In the fifteen individual exhibition rooms, diverse specimens of aquatic organisms are displayed, such as whales, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, crabs, shrimps, shellfishes, echinoderms, coelenterates, mangroves and algae. The museum is characterized with the features of variety, entirety, peculiarity and rarity.

VARIETY The museum contains about 3000 species of aquatic organisms. Among them, there are more than 1000 species of kaleidoscopic shellfishes; over 900 species of gaily-colored fishes; 400 species of crabs and shrimps of various shapes; nearly 400 species of varied and graceful algae and hundreds of other freshwater and sea aquatic organisms. These samples are exhibited orderly and beautifully by their categories, which forms a mystical world of aquatic organisms.

ENTIRETY  The visitors can feel the “entirety” of the museum through two facts. One is that there are all species of various aquatic organisms here, such as fishes, crabs, shrimps, algae, whales, reptiles, amphibians, echinoderms, annelid, sponge and coelenterates. The other is that most of the samples on display are collected from all over the world. For example, the krill from the Antarctica;the giant algae from North America;the red abalone from South America;the crocodile from Africa; the oyster from Europe;the prawn from Australia;the tropical coral reef and turtle from Xisha  and Nansha Islands (South China Sea); the shellfish from Tarim Basin and the Dongting Lake (in China),etc.

PECULIARITY Being rich in peculiar samples is another outstanding feature of the museum. The best examples are  vibrissaphora  boringii toad (horned monster)with two horns on its head, the freak shark with a combined body and two heads, the electric ray discharging electricity, the mudskipper good at jumping, the flying fish gliding in the sky by stretching its pectorals, the giant clam (the king of bivalve shellfish) weighting tens of kilograms, the horseshoe crab with blue blood, the globefish containing deadly poison, the taro conch swallowing people to death and the humpback, etc.

RARITY  The museum collects the specimens of some precious animals under First-grade and Second-grade national preservation, including pygmy sperm whole, common seal,wide-beaked porpoise, hawk′s bill twtle, giant salamander,Chinese sturgeon, lancelet, nautilus, silverlip pearl and so on. There are also shell fossils and fish fossils of 450 million years ago.

In order to publicize the outstanding achievements of those predecessor scientists who have devoted themselves to the sea science  and aquatic science of our country, three memorial halls are set up here in honor of Pro.Zhang-Xi, Pro.Zhu-Yuanding and Pro. Zeng-Chengkui,  where their lives, scientific contributions and research achievements are described.

While serving as the base of instruction, research and the popularization of scientific knowledge, the museum integrates and expresses the qualities of being scientific, intellectual, interesting, entertaining and enjoyable. The museum has been appointed as a scenic spot of the Zhanjiang City and a scientific and educational base for the youth and teenagers of Zhanjiang City and Guangdong Province.
